This training course is aimed at qualified professionals in individual, child, family and group therapy who are interested in learning more about the couple relationship from a psychodynamic perspective.
The course will be of interest to clinicians who are currently working with couples and those who are considering working with couples. It will also be relevant to clinicians who need to keep the couple in mind whilst working with individuals, children and families.
Prior exposure to psychoanalytic concepts is an advantage, but not a prerequisite.
The Tavistock Training Course will:
- Introduce the central concepts used in understanding unconscious processes in couple interaction;
- Offer a framework for understanding conscious and unconscious communication in couples that is grounded in theory, clinical case examples and seminar discussion;
- Enable you to begin to make use of psychodynamic concepts in formulating and understanding the relationship aspect of your work with couples or individuals; and
- Give each participant the opportunity to present some work and learn from the work of others.
Two lectures will be conducted each day and will include:
- Thinking about the Couple in Individual Work;
- Working with the Sexual Relationship;
- Unconscious Couple Fit;
- Countertransference and Transference in Couple Therapy;
- Shared Unconscious Beliefs
Additional:
The course will include two participant clinical presentations each day, offering an opportunity for attendees to discuss their own material in small groups led by psychoanalytic couple therapists.

Course Facilitators
Judith is a psychodynamic and psychosexual couple psychotherapist. After qualifying and working with individuals, couples and families as a therapist outside the UK for a number of years, Judith undertook further training in couple therapy and psychosexual therapy at Tavistock Relationships and has worked as a psychosexual therapist in the NHS. Currently, she co-leads the Mentalization-Based Therapy for Couples workshop and works as a clinical lecturer, tutor and supervisor at Tavistock Relationships. She is also a training supervisor on Couple Therapy for Depression, for NHS practitioners within IAPT services. Additionally, she has worked on the Adopting Together project, providing relationship support for parents who have adopted.

Marian has been working with couples and individuals presenting with relationship issues since 1989. She is a psychoanalytic couple psychotherapist and a psychosexual therapist. Formerly Head of Professional Development and Training, she is now Head of Psychosexual Training at Tavistock Relationships where she also works as a lecturer, trainer and supervisor. She has lectured and taught on psychosexual and relationship issues in UK and Europe and has contributed to several media articles and publications in this area, most recently (2018) Mental Health Today, Huffington Post, The Telegraph, and the chapter ‘Let’s talk about Sex’ in ‘Engaging Couples: New Directions in Therapeutic Work with Families’ (Routledge, 2018).
